I'm not a big fan of the standard blogger templates but you can do some nice work with a little tweaking. For instance: http://experimentgarden.blogspot.com/
For my blog: http://blog.oshineye.com/ I took the standard Minimal template and just made the central column a little wider and made the fonts bigger. That's enough for me as I'm not a designer.

They've started playing with this: http://status.net/wiki/OMBoverPuSH which avoids many of the problems with the previous attempt at a federation protocol by reusing existing standards. I'm just happy they listened and are thinking of using Atom as their payload format.

The talk went pretty well despite getting caught in a traffic jam on the way. Lots of people had good questions and ideas for apps they want to build. I pointed them at the JaikuEngine source code for tips.
People often don't want to start until they 'the right idea' but the trick is to start building something, anything and then the good ideas come.
